the distinction between “crafts” and “fine art” is probably driven by misogyny and the devaluation of women’s labor
More you might like
art forms that have traditionally been practiced by women like embroidery are devalued and called just “crafts” while art forms that women historically were mostly barred from (painting, sculpture) are “fine art”
Also racism; African and Indigenous art is considered crafts whereas only white forms are “art”

@thisisntmyrealhair I thought you might have some suggestions
not to be an art freak but my chemical romance really were so much more than a band and they respected art so much and they respected their vision and they respected their fans’ intelligence and taste enough to never stray from the quality of their art and instead always make it bigger and bigger as the band grew
male artists are all trying martyrdom on for size, sometimes its ok, but for most its the first time theyre experiencing their death… women die and are killed again and again in most aspects of their lives and so art is just another place to die in, their art always reflects that and why its the only art i truly respect
If you think art is easy or a lazy escape route through college then fuck you, art is degrading, it fucks with your self worth, for every 100 paintings you do, 99 of them will be shit - you just do it and hope it looks good. When you can’t project an idea from your head onto paper the way you want it, it is heart breaking and so fucking frustrating, don’t tell me art is easy because you need to be very head strong to cope with constantly under achieving in something you love
god whenever i see those jokes that are like.. “haha lads we put glasses on the floor at the MET and everyone thought it was art jokes on them” jokes on you bitch! you put something out there in a context of display + consumption of art and people took it seriously because that is what the social etiquette of galleries impedes the viewer to do and you drew a response and reaction out of them and then thousands of other people by laughing at them. you made art bitch. you simulated the experience then proved your own joke with you as the punchline bitch. not the viewers.
Some facts:
1) Black Americans created jazz.
2) Jewish Americans created comic books.
3) These things are said to be the only original American art forms.
This should be mentioned every time someone talks about how black people’s culture is “inferior” or how America is a “Christian nation”, because there is no original American art that is white and Christian in origin.
honestly, anyone can make art
oh and making art is not a competition and it should never be seen as that
Ik now a days its trendy to like Jean Michel Basquiat but I’m tired of people buying his crown logo shirt from urban outfitters and reblogging his art without knowing anything about his amazing ass legacy
- He rose to fame while in a spray painting duo called SAMO
- He was black and his family were immigrants
- In 5 years he went from homelessness to selling his art for thousands of dollars
- He was a sex worker
- He was queer
- His art has sold for more than any other art from an american artist
- He was an addict
- Andy Warhol was his best friend
- He was an intellectual that spoke 3 languages and he never graduated high school
- David fucking Bowie collaborated with him
- HIs art mostly covered concepts like racism, colonialism, and poverty
Basquiat is quite possibly the most important figure in American art and I’m tired of seeing Urban Outfitters selling his shit without understanding his importance to pop culture in America
